All public transport is frequent, reliable, relatively safe and very cheap. Trains are fairly efficient, reasonably fast and certainly cheap, but they're often not as convenient as buses.

Credit Cards
Don't bother taking travellers cheques of any denomination or currency unless you absolutely must: you can only exchange them at the Bank Melli branches at the international airport in Tehran and in central Tehran. An increasing number of mid-range hotels (and all top-end places) accept Visa or MasterCard
Tipping
Tipping is optional but probably worth it as most doing jobs where you could tip are on a meagre wage.
Bargaining is expected in the bazaar but not in shops. Private taxies are always negotiable.
